Olympics Today: Tuesday's guide for what to watch in Paris (and Tahiti)
Day 4 of the Olympics brings one of the marquee events of the Games: the women’s gymnastics team final. #
The U.S. sailed through qualifying in first place and remains the favorite to win gold, with Italy, China, and Brazil the top contenders.
Elsewhere, three more swimming medal events take place, 3×3 basketball begins, and surfing hands out its first medals in Tahiti.
Events to watch:
- After winning a silver medal in Tokyo, the U.S. women’s team aims to return to the top of the podium for the first time since 2016.
- Biles, despite nursing a calf injury, led the all-around standings in qualifying.
- A gold medal in the team event would be the fifth of Biles’ career. She also qualified for individual finals in all-around, beam, and floor.
3×3 basketball debuted at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago, and the United States women won the first gold medal. The men’s team begins play against Serbia.
The second Olympic surfing competition ends with the men’s and women’s gold medal matches on the famous waves of Teahupo’o in Tahiti.
In swimming, a star-studded race in the women’s 100-meter backstroke final is anticipated. The men’s 800-meter freestyle and men’s 4×200-meter freestyle relay are also scheduled.
Since rugby sevens debuted at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, a U.S. rugby team has never placed better than fifth. The American women defeated Great Britain in the quarterfinals to clinch a place in Tuesday’s semifinals — and a shot at a medal.
Stephen Nedoroscik helped the United States earn its first team medal in men’s gymnastics since 2008 with a remarkable performance on the pommel horse.
